Influence of the luminance level on visual performance with a disposable soft cosmetic tinted contact lens

Abstract: The purpose of the present work was to study the effect on visual performance of wearing disposable soft tinted contact lenses for cosmetic purposes. Parameters such as contrast sensitivity (Vistech 6000), colour vision (Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue colour test), visual fields (static Goldmann perimetry) and subjective vision (what the wearer feels while wearing the lenses) were studied under different illumination levels in order to check for possible vision losses while wearing these contact lenses at low illu… Show more

“…If we analyze in more detail the mesopic CS, there was a reduction of the CS values in relation to photopic conditions, especially at high spatial frequencies. This agrees with classic data on the effect of luminance level on CS (16,17). Our monocular and binocular CS results in both groups, under mesopic and photopic conditions, were comparable to those found by Alfonso et al (8) with the same lens in patients with low-moderate ametropia.…”

“…It has also been reported that a significant percentage of all new contact lenses dispensed are plano (no refractive power)-tinted lenses for cosmetic use [3]. However, there have been several reports showing visual disturbances, such as visual field constrictions [1,4], night vision disturbances [1], and declines in contrast sensitivity [1,5] after wearing tinted soft contact lenses. In fact, we sometimes observe that tinted soft contact lens wearers report blurred vision or night vision disturbance even though visual acuity measured with high-contrast acuity chart is sufficiently good.…”

“…Although pupil miosis can be introduced by either a surgically implanted corneal inlay or cosmetic contact lenses, such corneal plane small pupils cause significant reductions in light reaching the peripheral retina, e.g. >50% reduction at 30 degrees eccentricity, which can constrict the visual field .…”
