Influence of the Flavonoid, Quercetin on Antioxidant Status, Lipid Peroxidation and Histopathological Changes in Hyperammonemic Rats

Abstract: We have studied the ability of quercetin (a bioflavonoid) in tackling oxidative stress to alleviate the symptoms during ammonium chloride-induced hyperammonemia. Hyperammonemia was induced by the treatment of ammonium chloride (AC) 100 mg/kg b.w for 56 days. Hyperammonemic rats exhibited reduced urea (in plasma) and increased ammonia (in blood), uric acid (in plasma), creatinine (in serum), oxidative stress markers (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and hydroperoxides (HP) and decreased levels of… Show more

“…Under abnormal conditions such as hyperammonemia in rats, quercetin was found to protect against oxidative stress and exert anti-inflammatory activity [86]. During induced oxidative stress in rats, rutin was found to act as a strong antioxidant protecting against oxidative effects [87]. Moreover, in another in vitro study, it was demonstrated that kaempferol has moderate oxygen radical absorption capacity and strong radical-scavenging activity [80].…”

“…Quercetin is a much studied flavonoid compound with various bioactive properties. Studies have shown that it possesses antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, antiviral, antithrombotic and anti-inflammatory potentials respectively ( Moosavi et al., 2016 ; Kanimozhi et al., 2017 ). Gallic acid also possesses strong antioxidant potential ( Khan et al., 2020 ; Ezzati et al., 2020 ; Abarikwu et al., 2017 ), while the antioxidant potential of rutin has also been investigated by others ( Manzoni et al., 2020 ; Liu et al., 2020 ; Sharma et al., 2020 ; Halvorsen et al., 2006 ).…”

“…Dysregulated liver function biomarkers were also normalized by the administration of ELE-PM especially the most effective dose of 600 mg/kg. Studies have shown that quercetin and gallic acid have the potentials to normalize dysregulated liver function markers and reduce MDA level in vivo in various experimental disease conditions ( Moosavi et al., 2016 ; Goudarzi et al., 2017 ; Kanimozhi et al., 2017 ). Perhaps, these bioactive compounds earlier identified in ELE-PM through the HPLC studies may be responsible for this striking antioxidant potential in addition to the healing effect on the cellular membrane of the hepatocytes.…”

“…These compounds must be hydrolyzed by enzymes from the colon microflora before being absorbed. For example, most glycoside forms resist acid hydrolysis in rat stomachs, although absorption in the gastric portion occurs for some flavonoids, such as quercetin, but not their glycosides [ 33 ]. In general, plasma concentrations vary according to the nature of the polyphenols and the food source [ 34 , 35 ].…”
