Influence of the Design on Slope Stability in Solid Waste Landfills

Abstract: This paper presents, firstly, the influence of the geometry of a slope in the safety factor (SF). In order to do this, the SF is compared among three types of slopes: with berms every 7 m high and a dam at the toe, without berms and with a dam at the toe, and without berms nor dams. It was observed that, for the same inclination, the berms do not significantly influence the stability. However, the construction of an earth dam at the base increases safety, especially with little height and slope in waste with p… Show more

“…In order to know the stability of the landfill slope ( Figure 2) the tool applies the equation of the curves showed in the nomograms developed by Colomer et al (2013). To design the nomogram represented in Figure 3, soil mechanics methods and formulas were applied (Taylor, 1948;Janbu, 1967;Bishop, 1960).…”

“…Obtaining appropriate shear strength parameters is critical to the outcome of a stability analysis. The shear strength of waste material depends on depends on several factors including waste composition, degradation, moisture content and particle size [3]. Thereafter, an appropriate factor of safety must be selected.…”
