Influence of the Current State of Global Warming on Fruit Tree Growth in Japan

Abstract: To grasp the actual influence of global warming on fruit tree production in Japan, a questionnaire was sent to prefectural institutes for fruit tree research. All 47 prefectures responded. All prefectures replied that global warming had affected on at least one tree species. The impact had extended to almost all tree species. The tree species were classified in to two types by responses of fruit development to climate changes. One group was the earlier development type and the other was the prolonged developme… Show more

“…Host plant species of S. commune with reference to mode of infection are listed in Table 1. Recently, it was pointed out that global warming may enhance the incidence of sunscald, late frost damage and even freezing injury, depending on locality and tree species 53 . Therefore, appropriate care of trees suffering from such climatic damage will be of increasing importance to manage wood-rot diseases caused by S. commune and other basidiomycetous pathogens.…”

“…As a result, dormancy has an impact upon the following season's fruit production and vegetative growth. Recent global climate changes such as global warming (Solomon, 2007) are reported to affect winter chilling accumulation (Atkinson et al, 2013;Luedeling et al, 2011) and the dormancy release of fruit trees (Sugiura et al, 2007). Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the genetic factors underlying the control of dormancy to secure sustainable fruit production and maintain supply (Campoy et al, 2011a).…”

“…Nonuniform flowering is thought to be caused by irregular bud endodormancy release, which probably results from global warming (Sugiura et al, 2007). Moreover, the optimal production regions for some fruit trees such as apple (Malus × domestica) are predicted to move to more northern areas of Japan in the near future (Sugiura and Yokozawa, 2004); therefore, it is necessary to investigate the genetic factors that control endodormancy.…”
