Influence of the core hole onKβemission following photoionization or orbital electron capture: A comparison using MnO and55Fe2

Abstract: The Mn K␤ fluorescence emission in MnO after photoionization and in 55 Fe 2 O 3 after radioactive electron capture decay from the K shell have been measured using a crystal array spectrometer with an instrumental energy bandwidth of 0.7 eV ͑full width at half maximum͒. Both compounds have a 3d 5 valence electron configuration in the ionic approximation. It is found that the spectral features after K capture in 55 Fe 2 O 3 are shifted in emission energy and are sharper, compared to the spectra following photoio… Show more

“…These values were adjusted in order to fit the data. The reason of the larger width observed for the S=3/2 states resides in the fact that the 3d 3p radiative decay channel is favored by the spin alignment of the 3p hole with the 3d spin [17][18][19].…”

“…Higher energy configurations were not taken into account [17,26]. In order to separate local from non-local effects, we also did calculations for an isolated MnO 6 octahedron by removing the external orbitals.…”

“…The KβXES is mainly composed of the strong Kβ 1,3 line and a less intense Kβ′satellite line at a lower emission energy. The 3p3d exchange interaction model [19,20] has satisfactorily explained this split structure. Kβ 1,3 line peak is slightly asymmetric with a weaker shoulder on the low energy side.…”
