Juvenile blue mussels Mytilus edulis were cultivated in flow-through aquaria to investigate the influence of dissolved cadmium on cadmium accumulation (in terms of the Cd/shell-wt index). Where the ratio (by weight) of dissolved Zn to Cd remains within the range 25:l to 60:1, accumulation of Cd is not significantly influenced by dissolved Zn. Higher levels of concomitant Zn reduce the Cd/shellwt index. A lower ratio of Zn to Cd may slightly increase Cd accumulation. The Cd/shell-wt index is proportional to ambient levels of dissolved Cd up to 100 yg 1-' There were no significant effects on growth up to ca 30 pg 1-' Cd. Results corresponded to earlier experimental work and to field surveillance data reported in the literature. A procedure is suggested by which the concentration of dissolved Cd In natural environments may be estimated from 'mussel watch' data (Cd body burden, shell weight) and salinity. Cd accumulation in the mussel is described by the integral of the Cd/shell-rut index with growth of shells by weight. A model of biochemical accumulation of metals requires laboratory and field transplant experiments to be designed such that considerable growth is allowed in a new environment in order to approximate a new balance of metal residues in organisms in relation to ambient levels.

Recent studies have quantified extensively metal assimilation efficiency from ingested food sources in aquatic invertebrates. Metal absorption efficiency (alpha) from the dissolved phase is analogous to metal assimilation efficiency, but it remains poorly defined and quantified. In this study, the alpha of four trace metals [Cd, Cr(VI), Se(IV), and Zn] was determined in three species of marine bivalves (green mussel [Perna viridis], black mussel [Septifer virgatus], and clam [Ruditapes philippinarum]). Individual bivalves were first measured for their clearance rates, followed by measurements of the metal influx rate, after which the metal alpha and the uptake rate constant (Ku) were then computed. Among the four metals considered, the highest Ku and alpha were found for Zn, followed by Cd > Cr(VI) > Se(IV). The Ku values were comparable between the two mussels but were 1.8- to 3.3-fold lower in the clams. Interspecific difference in metal Ku was strongly related to, but intraspecific difference in Ku was not affected by, the bivalve's clearance rate. Interspecific difference in metal alpha was smaller than the metal Ku and was independent of the clearance rate, whereas the intraspecific difference in metal alpha correlated with the individual variations of the clearance rate. Within each bivalve species, a significant negative correlation was found between the metal alpha and the clearance rate, implying that an individual pumping a greater amount of water was coupled to a lower alpha. Significant correlation between the alpha of four metals was also documented in all three species of bivalves. Thus, metal bioavailability from the aqueous phase was directly related to the physiological conditions of the animals. Both the aqueous chemistry and the physiology of the animals can be important in affecting metal bioavailability from the dissolved phase.

The cellular processes involved in metal metabolism in molluscs are reviewed, with emphasis on the contribution of microscopy (AMG, ARG, EPMA, and SIMS) to both basic research of metal cell biology and applied environmental research. In molluscs, metal uptake may occur by facilitated diffusion, active transport, or endocytosis, and can be enhanced by MT synthesis or formation of mineralized granules. In aquatic molluscs, gills constitute a key interface for dissolved metal uptake, where metals are bound to MT, incorporated into lysosomes, and released basally towards the blood plasma and circulating hemocytes. However, particulate metal uptake is mainly achieved via the digestive tract by endocytosis; further metals are transferred first to lysosomes and then to residual bodies, especially in the digestive cells of the digestive gland. Additionally, metals can be accumulated selectively in specific cell types. As ligands pools differ from cell to cell, different metals may be retained in different cell types. Class "a" metals are localized in cells with granules composed of carbonate, oxalate, phosphate, and sulfate (oxygen donors), whereas "b" metals are associated with those cell types rich in sulfur and nitrogen ligands (sulfur donors). In molluscs, oxygen donors occur in connective tissue calcium cells and basophilic cells, whereas sulfur donors are present in digestive cells, podocytes, nephrocytes, and rhogocytes. Hemocytes, which constitute the most relevant system for metal transport between tissues, move around the body and may penetrate tissues and remove metals from the inner medium to be accumulated in lysosomes as nondigested products. Rhogocytes also participate in metal mobilization, accumulation, and release. The assessment of metal levels in target cells of sentinel molluscs by microscopic techniques provides an early-warning measure, with promising applications as an exposure biomarker for environmental monitoring programs.
