Influence of Technological Parameters on the Isomerization of Geraniol Using Sepiolite

Abstract: In the current study, the isomerization of geraniol over a natural sepiolite as a catalyst was investigated and optimized. Prior to application in the isomerization process, the physical and chemical properties of sepiolite were characterized using a battery of instrumental techniques, including XRD, nitrogen adsorption at 77 K, SEM, EDXRF, UV-Vis and FT-IR. Results indicated that geraniol isomerization is very complicated due to the large number of reactions taking place. The catalytic studies showed that the… Show more

“…This trend also applies to catalysts, because a lot of research shows that porous materials of natural origin (minerals) can also be active catalysts for isomerization and oxidation processes. The use of reagents of natural origin (obtained from plant material) and minerals as catalysts often reduces the costs of running the process and perfectly fits the idea of sustainable development in the organic industry [1][2][3][4][5].…”

“…Although the conversion was influenced by reaction temperatures, the selectivity towards linalool required specific tuning of the porosity and surface morphology of catalysts. 43 The mechanism of linalool isomerization to geraniol or nerol occurred via similar six-membered ring intermediates due to the C = C double bond polarization and the increased electron density of the metal catalysts. Isomerization of linalool from geraniol is a complex reaction, due to further conversion to different products, such as β-pinene, nerol, the ocimenes and also citral.…”
