Influence of surface structure and chemistry on water droplet splashing

Abstract: Water droplet splashing and aerosolization play a role in human hygiene and health systems as well as in crop culturing. Prevention or reduction of splashing can prevent transmission of diseases between animals and plants and keep technical systems such as pipe or bottling systems free of contamination. This study demonstrates to what extent the surface chemistry and structures influence the water droplet splashing behaviour. Smooth surfaces and structured replicas of Calathea zebrina (Sims) Lindl. leaves were… Show more

“…Dynamic interactions between water droplets and the surfaces are well researched in the different types of splash-phenomena described, e.g., in Rioboo et al [ 119 ], Yarin [ 113 ], Xu et al [ 118 ], Motzkus et al [ 120 ], Gilet and Bourouiba [ 121 ], and Koch and Grichnik [ 122 ]. More recently in focus came the contact times between droplets and surfaces: the time span a drop impacting and bouncing on a hydrophobic surface is in contact with the surface.…”

“…In plants, this phenomenon was analyzed in Calathea zebrina, a hydrophilic tropical understory plant, and its corresponding polymer replica (Fig. 30 ) by [ 122 ]. The anti-splashing effect is promising for biomimetic applications.…”

“…The geometrical structure of an impacted solid surface also plays an important role in the surface damage characteristics (Tomita et al 2002;Koch & Grichnik 2016;Kondo & Ando 2019;Rajesh et al 2019). For example, high-speed droplet impingement occurs in power plant pipes, and small holes are usually produced at the pipe surface where the pipe is bent, which is one of the major restraining factors for the equipment's lifetime (Li, Mori & Ninokata 2012).…”

“…As a consequence, the style irreversibly curls up in a split second and pollen (pp) is transmitted to the insect’s body (Claßen-Bockhoff, 1991). It took 50 years of investigation to understand the pollination mechanism (Lindley, 1819, 1826; Nees von Esenbeck, 1831; Gris, 1859; Delpino, 1869) but the biomechanics on which the style bending is based on, is still unknown.…”
