Influence of Supramolecular Template Organization on Mineralization

Abstract: The influence of supramolecular diacetylenic template structures on spacial location and morphology of CaC03 crystals grown under the template has been demonstrated. The periodic modulations in supramolecular template textures (global geometry; millimeter scale) influence crystal location, whereas the local density of the template (local geometry; nanometer scale) influences the polymorph Selectivity. For various anionic functional groups under specific experimental conditions, it was found that the binding of… Show more

“…The potential for using lipid monolayer films as protein imprint matrices is evident in template-mediated crystal nucleation and biomineralization, where monolayers serve as fluid lattices that laterally restructure to favor epitaxial crystal nucleation and growth (105,106). This concept can be extended to impart recognition sites through adsorption-induced restructuring (patterning or templating) of fluid monolayers, as has been investigated using metal chelating lipid monolayers to target Histagged proteins (101).…”

“…Prior to these studies, monolayers of N- (10,12-pentacosadiynoyl)glycine (6) were analyzed by BAM [86]. Calcite crystals were found to grow beneath a monolayer of 6 at low surface pressure (π = 0-5 mN/m), where the BAM image of the monolayer indicated smectic domains.…”

“…This is the basis for intermicellar CaCO 3 crystallization. 25 Although there are several studies regarding the effect of phospholipid molecules on the in vitro biomineralization process, [26][27][28][29][30][31]42 there has been no analysis of the effect of micelle spatial arrangement on the crystallization of CaCO 3 .…”
