Influence of Sublethal Exposure to Abamectin on the Biological Performance of Neoseiulus longispinosus (Acari: Phytoseiidae)

Abstract: Effects of sublethal exposure to abamectin on the biological performance of Neoseiulus longispinosus (Evans) were studied under ambient laboratory conditions of 28 +/- 2 degrees C and 80 +/- 15% RH with 24 h light. The red form of the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, complex (Acari: Tetranychidae), was offered as prey. The LC50 obtained from the contact bioassay at 48 h after treatment was 0.015 ppm (AI). A big change in kill for a given variation in dosage for the regression slope probably in… Show more

“…In contrast, our study showed that it was highly toxic to immatures, although it was harmless to the adult female. Our result in abamectin is consistent to Ibrahim and Yee (2000), who showed that abamectin was toxic to N. longispinosus, while Zhang and Sanderson (1990) suggested that this chemical was not highly toxic to P. persimilis.…”

The influence of abamectin on the biological performance of N. longispinosus in Malaysia was reported by Ibrahim and Yee (2000). “…Effects of exposure to sublethal concentrations of pesticides on longevity seem to be highly dependent on the type of pesticide and the exposed insect species. Some studies show that sublethal concentrations of pesticides reduce the longevity [Ibrahim and Yee, 2000;Desneux et al, 2007;Boina et al, 2009], whereas others indicate no sublethal effects on insect longevity [Yokoyama and Pritchard, 1984;Pons et al, 1999]. Occasionally, exposure to sublethal doses of pesticides can increase the lifespan of certain insects [Ball and Su, 1979].…”

“…The original population of T. urticae was collected from the castor oil plant (Ricinus communis L.), and reared continuously on sweet potato plants. The All experiments were conducted in the laboratory at 25±2°C and 65±5% RH and 16:8 L: D h. The experiment was performed on mite eggs using the leaf dip methods (Ibrahim and Yee, 2000). Mite females were left on castor bean leaves to lay eggs for 24 h then removed.…”

“…Several researchers have reported that lifetable parameters of phytophagous and predatory mites were affected by sub-lethal concentrations of pesticides (Ibrahim and Yee, 2000;Hardman et al, 2003). Sanatgar et al (2011) argued that the effect of frequent application of hexythiazox on r m was not significant after spraying of P. persimilis for several generations.…”
