A total of 40 dairy cows in early lactation (60 to 90 days) of four different breeds were selected, comprising 10 animals each from Holstein Friesian (HF), Jersey (J), Achai (ACH) and F 1 (HF x Sahiwal). All cows were multiparous with body weight 250-400 kg and milk production ranged from 3 to 12 kg/day. Blood samples were collected from each animal at fortnight intervals for 90 days. In the present study, 65 % of cows reestablished estrus while 35 % cows remained anestrous, 80 % of Holsteins showed estrus followed by 70 % of Jersey and F 1 cows while in Achai breed showed only 40 % and 60 % cows remained anestrous. Blood glucose and daily milk yield significantly affected post partum estrus (P<0.01) while serum total protein and triglycerides concentration in blood did not affect post partum estrus. The serum glucose level was lower (39.93 ± 3.14 mg/dl) two months before and showed an increasing trend (49.63 ± 2.47 mg/dl) towards commencement of estrus as well as during estrus (48.20 ± 2.42 mg/dl) and then a declining trend was observed. Mean concentration of serum glucose was significantly higher in Jersey (52.50 ± 2.09 mg/dl) followed by F 1 (39.68 ± 1.45 mg/dl), HF (38.85 ± 1.77 mg/dl) and Achai (33.30 ± 2.17 mg/dl) respectively. Breed type significantly affected blood glucose (P < 0.05) in jersey cows whereas both blood glucose and triglycerides were significantly affected (P < 0.001 and P < 0.05, respectively) in F 1 cows.

RESUMO -Avaliou-se, durante um ano, o desempenho reprodutivo de 94 vacas leiteiras mestiças Bos taurus × Bos indicus submetidas a um programa de reprodução assistida. Um protocolo de inseminação artificial em tempo fixo (IATF) foi executado por meio de dispositivo intravaginal contendo progesterona e das injeções de prostaglandina F2α e de cipionato de estradiol. Por meio de ultrassonografia, entre 7 e 14 dias após as inseminações ou montas controladas, realizou-se a detecção de corpo lúteo nos ovários a fim de determinar a taxa de ovulação e, no 28 o dia, fez-se o diagnóstico de gestação para cálculo da taxa de concepção. Respeitou-se um período mínimo de 34 dias após o parto antes do tratamento. Não houve influência do escore de condição corporal e da presença de corpo lúteo no início do protocolo, nem da reutilização do dispositivo intravaginal e da monta controlada ou inseminação artificial, sobre as taxas de ovulação, concepção e concepção das vacas ovuladas. As taxas de concepção e de concepção das vacas ovuladas foram afetadas negativamente pelo elevado número de dias pós-parto (DPP), ou dias em lactação e pela época quente do ano, primavera/verão. A resposta ao protocolo de inseminação artificial em tempo fixo baseado no uso de progesterona, PGF2α e cipionato de estradiol é prejudicada pelo aumento dos dias em lactação e pela época quente do ano. A condição corporal não afeta a resposta ao protocolo de inseminação artificial, desde que as vacas tratadas apresentem escore acima de 2,25 pontos.Palavras-chave: concepção, eficiência reprodutiva, ovulação, protocolo de sincronização Timed artificial insemination and early pregnancy diagnosis in crossbred dairy cowsABSTRACT -It was evaluated, during a period of one year, the reproductive performance of 94 Bos taurus × Bos indicus crossbred dairy cows submitted to an assisted reproduction program. A timed artificial insemination (TAI) protocol was carried out by using an intra-vaginal progesterone device containing progesterone and through injections with Prostaglandin F2α and estradiol cypionate. By using ultrasound, from 7 to 14 days after inseminations or controlled mattings, detection of corpus luteum in the ovaries was done to determine ovulation rate and, on the 28 th day, diagnosis of pregnancy was carried out for calculation of conception rate. Treatment only started after a 34-day post-partum minimal period. Body condition score, presence of corpus luteum in the beginning of the protocol, reutilization of intra-vaginal device and controlled mating or artificial insemination did not influence rates of ovulation, conception and conception of ovulated cows. Rates of conception and rates of conception of ovulated cows were negatively affected by the higher number of days post partum (DPP), or days in milk and by the warmer seasons of the year, spring/summer. Days in Milk at First AI in Dairy Cows; Its Effect on Subsequent Reproductive Performance and Some Factors Influencing It

Abstract. The aim of the present study was to show the distribution of cows by days in milk (DIM) at first AI, effect of DIM at first AI on reproductive performance and some factors influencing DIM at first AI. A total of 767 Holstein Frisian cows that calved from January 2004 to December 2007 in 14 dairy herds were used. The first AI conception rate (FAICR) was 34.0%. Seventy-five percent of the cows were first inseminated within 100 days after calving. FAICR increased linearly up to 100 DIM. A one unit (20 days) longer DIM at first AI within the first 100 days postpartum increased the likelihood of a 2.4% FAICR. However, cows first inseminated at an earlier stage of lactation showed better reproductive performance in terms of pregnancy rate and calving to conception interval than cows first inseminated at a later stage. A one day increase in the interval from calving to first AI reduced the likelihood of 0.85 days to become pregnant. Herd or region located in southwestern Japan, tie-stall herd, first AI in spring, higher parity, uterine infection, metabolic diseases and/or mastitis and abnormal resumption of postpartum ovarian cycles contributed to delaying first AI. Dev. 57: [643][644][645][646][647][648][649] 2011) ecreased conception rate at first AI in dairy cows has been reported worldwide [1][2][3][4], resulting in an increased number of services per conception, delayed conception and increase of days open. Our recent study also described that approximately 14% of 613 dairy cows in nine dairy herds in Japan had repeat breeding and that the repeat breeders showed extremely poor reproductive performance [5]. Nutritional interactions with reproductive performance in the early postpartum period through high feed consumption required to meet energy requirements have been recognized as reducing the first AI conception rate [6]. Changes in reproductive physiology due to elevated steroid metabolism [7] and metabolic changes in follicular fluid of the dominant follicle in early lactation [8] have been reported to be potential causes of reduction of the first AI conception rate in lactating dairy cows.Esslemont and Kossaibati [9] have provided a fertility management assessment checklist. To be considered good fertility management, 95% of the cows in the herd after calving must be serviced by keeping the average calving to first service interval at less than 70 days, the overall heat detection must be more than 55% and the pregnancy rate must be 50% or more. The requirements to achieve this target or high reproductive efficiency in a dairy herd are a disease-free transition period, high rates of submission to AI and a high conception rate per service [2].
