Influence of Splitter Blades on the Cavitation Performance of a Double Suction Centrifugal Pump

Abstract: In order to study the influence of splitter blades on double suction centrifugal pumps two impellers with and without splitter blades were investigated numerically and experimentally. Three-dimensional turbulence simulations with and without full cavitation model were applied to simulate the flow in the two pumps with different impellers. The simulation results agreed with the experiment results and the internal flows were analyzed. Both the numerical and experimental results show that by adding splitter blade… Show more

“…Full-length blades impeller Yang et al [9] compared the cavitating performance of two impellers, the baseline one having six full-length blades and the other designed with four splitter blades and four full-length blades. The splittered impeller maintains the same meridional geometry of the baseline one and the blades have the same shape.…”

“…In conclusion, a large body of work exists on the effect of splitter blades on wet and cavitating pump performance [7,8,9,12], but a study conducting an optimization of the most important design parameters for splitter blades with the objective of extending the operational range under cavitation has not been performed. Splitter blades are often designed by simply adding short blades with the same shape as the main blades, greatly limiting their effectiveness and modifying the blade loading distribution and the head-capacity curve, as Cavazzini points out [17].…”

“…Symmetry 2019, 11, x FOR PEER REVIEW 2 of 12 the low-pressure region inside the rope can be effectively diminished. Yang et al [12] applied eight alternating long and short blades, instead of the original six same-length blades, in a centrifugal pump. This enlarged the original passing area, making it have a relatively higher pressure than before.…”

“…NACA0009 and its modified profiles are popular in the former studies of hydrodynamics and hydraulic machinery including the LE cavitation, tip-clearance cavitation, wake and hydraulic damping, excitation and response [23,24]. Also, numerous researches have been carried out on the LE cavitation of hydraulic machineries [25][26][27][28][29][30].…”
