Influence of simplified dietary advice combined with new complete denture fabrication on masticatory function of complete denture wearers

Abstract: Background Dietary advice combined with prosthetic treatment could improve dietary intake earlier than prosthetic treatment only. This early improvement might signify early adaptation to new prostheses. Therefore, dietary advice might affect functional adaptation to new prostheses. Objective The aim was to clarify the influence of simple dietary advice on masticatory function of elderly individuals with new complete dentures. Methods A randomised controlled trial was performed on 59 edentulous elderly individu… Show more

“…In this study, more than half of the participants did not wear their removable dentures despite needing them. Wearing removable dentures improves the ability to masticate and improves QOL by allowing patients to eat a variety of foods [ 28 ]. The practice is extremely important for establishing oral nutrition due to its effect on food transport when swallowing [ 29 ] and the support it provides for oral and pharyngeal movement during oral nutrition [ 20 ].…”

“…In acute care hospitals, dentures are often removed because of management complexities, risk of aspiration or swallowing, and to prevent disturbances in sensory perception 12 . However, the presence of removable denture improves the masticatory ability 30 and the oral anatomical environment, and it may potentially play a role in supporting oral cavity and pharyngeal movements during oral intake, including bolus transportation and elevation of the hyoid bone in swallowing function training 31,32 . Therefore, the use of removable dentures during the acute management phase of medical conditions is important to maintain and improve early dysphagia rehabilitation.…”
