Influence of silicon sources and controlled release fertilizer on the growth of wheat cultivars of Balochistan under salt stress

Abstract: Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a staple food of Pakistan and constitutes 60% of the daily diet of a human being in Pakistan. Production of wheat can be improved by using marginal lands and the salt affected areas by silicon supplementation and improving fertilizers. As Nanotechnology has brought revolutions in agriculture, therefore silica nanoparticles (SiO2 Nps) have been used in this study to reduce the salinity stress. Seeds of four wheat varieties, Umeed and Raskoh (salt tolerant) and Zarghoon and Shahka… Show more

“…In about 23% of the world's cultivated lands, salinity stress strongly limits crop production [127]. The SiO 2 NPs improve germination of seeds and increase plants' fresh and dry weight and chlorophyll content with proline accumulation under NaCl stress in tomatoes [128,129]. The foliar spray of iron sulfate (FeSO 4 ) NPs exhibits a positive response in sunflower cultivars to salinity stress tolerance.…”

“…Many release systems of fertilizers use as transport vector inorganic materials such as clays [ 8 ], zeolites, double layer hydroxides [ 5 ], and some oxides [ 9 ]. Although some studies presented a reduction of loss of these substances to the soil, air, and water, they have not presented satisfactory results about a decrease of lixiviation, which accelerates the release of fertilizers to the environment [ 2 ].…”

“…Wheat cultivars treated with SiO 2 NPs improved biological antioxidant levels and seedling growth under salt stress [31]. Application of SiO 2 NPs on the strawberry plant in saline conditions increased the photosynthetic pigment and maintained the carotenoid and chlorophyll content, decreasing the effect on epicuticular wax [32].…”
