Influence of silane and solvated bonding agents on the bond strength to glass‐fibre posts

Abstract: The combined use of silane and solvated bonding agents on the bond strength to glass-fibre posts was investigated. A model Bis-GMA/HEMA adhesive was formulated with no solvent, 30% of ethanol or 80% of acetone. The surfaces of rectangular-shaped posts were silanated or not and one of the agents was applied, except for the control group. Cylinders of resin cement (RelyX ARC, 3M ESPE, Saint Paul, MN, USA) were built-up on the surfaces (n = 20) and submitted to shear testing. All groups showed higher bond strengt… Show more

“…Several researchers have proposed silane application to post surfaces to increase the BS between GFPs and resin cement [ 11 , 12 , 21 , 22 ]. Silanes are bifunctional molecules with one end capable of reacting with inorganic fiberglass and another one capable of copolymerizing with organic resin.…”

“…A limitation of the methodology used in the present study is that the treatments were carried out over ground surfaces of GFPs, a procedure that has been carried out in other studies (Oliveira et al . , , Gonçalves et al . , Cecchin et al .…”

“…Furthermore, contrary to ethanol contained in Bis-Silane, one-bottle Porcelain Primer used in this study contains an acetone solvent. Previously, better bond strength of the acetone-based adhesive was reported due to the ability of acetone for slight dissolution of epoxy resin, roughening the post surface ( 27 ).…”
