Influence of SiC and WC reinforcements on the mechanical characteristics of AA6061 hybrid metal matrix composites

Abstract: The stir casting process was used to prepare AA6061 hybrid aluminium composites with Silicon Carbide and Tungsten Carbide as reinforcement components in this study. For this analysis, five samples were taken with varied compositions of Silicon Carbide ( x) and Tungsten Carbide ( y) depending on weight fraction (x: y = 0: 0 percent, 4: 4 percent, 8: 8 percent). Prior to manufacturing, the reinforcing granules are ball milled and microscopically examined using SEM and laser-based particle size analysers to valid… Show more

“…Aluminum composites, also known as aluminum matrix composites (AMCs), are advanced materials that combine aluminum as the matrix with reinforcing elements to enhance specific properties. These reinforcing elements can include ceramic, metal, or polymer particles, fibers, or whiskers [10][11][12][13][14][15].One of the key advantages of aluminum composites is their exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, making them ideal for applications where both strength and lightweight design are crucial. This property makes them particularly suitable for aerospace, automotive, and sporting goods industries, where reducing weight while maintaining structural integrity is essential [16].Additionally, aluminum composites offer excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance, and dimensional stability [17].…”

“…Electrochemical Machining (ECM) is a leading non-conventional machining process in industrial applications, particularly for shaping highly robust materials with complex geometries (1) . ECM enables the controlled anodic dissolution of work materials submerged in an electrolytic solution, allowing for the production of complex structures from tough substrates (2) .…”
