Influence of Semiperfluorinated Chains on the Liquid Crystalline Properties of Amphiphilic Polyols:  Novel Materials with Thermotropic Lamellar, Columnar, Bicontinuous Cubic, and Micellar Cubic Mesophases

Abstract: Novel amphiphilic diols with semifluorinated alkyl chains have been synthesized. These are 1-benzoylaminopropane-2,3-diols carrying one, two, or three semiperfluorinated chains at the aromatic core, as well as a 2-benzoylaminopropane-1,3-diol and a 2-benzoylaminoethanol with two semiperfluorinated chains. Their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties were investigated by means of polarizing microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction. In comparison with the related hydrocarbon compo… Show more

“…[175,176] A variety of liquid-crystalline phases, that is, micellar cubic, hexagonal columnar, bicontinuous cubic, and smectic phases, are generated by tuning a balance of the volume fraction of the two incompatible parts and the molecular shape. For the series 48-50, the increase in the number of lipophilic chains drastically changes the mesophase patterns.…”

“…As a result, the introduction of perfluoroalkylated groups into large discotic PAHs paves the way toward the possibility of tuning their liquid crystalline phases into various ones which have been detected, so far, for smaller aromatic molecules bearing fluorinated groups. [41][42][43] …”

“…To this end, Tschierske et al, have shown that in conventional pendant chain liquid crystalline polymers, the volume fraction of the pendant chains plays an important role in defining the final curvature of the domain interfaces. 25,26 Furthermore, we have recently demonstrated that in columnar liquid crystalline phases based on dendronized polymer/alkyl tail ionic complexes, an ''inverted'' configuration (that is pendant chains in the columns), is possible also at large volume fractions of pendant chains.…”
