Influence of salicylaldehyde and methyl salicylate on post‐landing behaviour of Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande

Abstract: This study investigates behavioural responses of adult western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande; Thysan., Thripidae) females to direct contact with repellent phenylpropanoid plant compounds (salicylaldehyde and methyl salicylate) applied on bean and cucumber leaves. The residence time of F. occidentalis females until take off was significantly shorter on bean or cucumber leaf discs treated with salicylaldehyde at 1% concentration compared with control leaf discs. A methyl salicylate (1%) trea… Show more

“…Methyl salicylate (found in oil of wintergreen) and salicylaldehyde are among these compounds (Koschier et al 2000, Chermenskaya et al 2001, Koschier et al 2007). Methyl salicylate is a phenylpropanoid compound derived from salicylic acid and is the primary constituent in the oil of wintergreen (Koschier et al 2007). In our study, the source of wintergreen oil tested was G. procumbens, a plant commonly known as eastern teaberry or American wintergreen.…”

“…It is known that this compound can have repellent and deterrent effects on the phytophages. Application of this compound on bean or cucumber leaves decreased the time spent by adult western flower thrips on the lamina, reduced the number of eggs laid and the degree of damage (Koschier et al, 2007). The abundance of planthoppers, phytophagous mites, and aphids decreased considerably in the vineyard plots with methyl salicylate dispensers (Hardie et al, 1994;Mallinger et al, 2011).…”
