Influence of rootstock on drought response in young ‘Gale Gala’ apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) trees

Abstract: 'Gale Gala' trees' response to drought stress was associated with the rootstock's genotype onto which it was grafted. Trees with M. sieversii as rootstock are more drought resistant than trees with M. hupehensis as rootstock, which suggests that M. sieversii can be widely used as rootstock in arid and semi-arid regions.

“…These results indicate that the activities of some antioxidant enzymes in leaves and fruit of tomato are influenced not only by the shoot, but also by the root genotype. Similar results have also been reported by Liu et al (2012) and Zhang et al (2010). Further research is needed to elucidate the underlying signaling pathways that contribute to protection of leaves and fruit from oxidative stress that are governed by root genotype.…”

“…The protective enzyme system (SOD, POD, and CAT), the main enzymes scavenging ROS, could inhibit effectively the peroxidation of cellular membrane lipids. Under drought stress, greater SOD activity plays an important role in clearing away O 2 and generating H 2 O 2 , which could be further changed into water by CAT and POD (Liu et al, 2012). With increasing drought stress, the accumulation of ROS increased, MDA accumulation in rice leaf increased, and membrane lipid peroxidation also increased (Fukao et al, 2011).…”

“…Chl content determination. Chl content was measured according to Liu et al (2012). Samples (0.2 g) were extracted in ethanolacetone (1:1, v/v) at room temperature to determine the contents of Chl a and Chl b with a spectrophotometer (752N ultraviolet; Shanghai Yidian, China) at 663 nm and 645 nm.…”

“…The SOD activity was measured using the method provided by Liu et al . 57 . A total of 20 µL of the crude enzymes was mixed with 1.0 mL of the reactants containing 50 mmol L −1 potassium phosphate buffer (pH = 7.8), 6.5 mmol −1 methionine, 50 µmol L −1 NBT, 10 µmol L −1 EDTA, and 20 µmol L −1 riboflavin, and 1.0 mL portions of the reactants without the crude enzymes were used as the control.…”
