Application. Plantations of bareroot oak stock in the midwestern United States have demonstrated limited success in terms of survival and especially in terms of early growth . Poor performance of hardwood plantations in general could be the result of failure to produce suitable seedlings in the nursery or failure to recognize the suitability of seedlings produced . Nursery grading procedures are usually based on seedling height, root collar diameter, terminal bud condition, or shoot :root ratio . The common emphasis on shoot morphology has not consistently provided a reliable measure of potential survival and growth after planting . This study suggests that nursery grading should include evaluation of seedling root system morphology in addition to shoot characteristics .Abstract. On 3 sites, 3-year performance of 1+0 northern red oak (Quercus rubra L .) seedlings was evaluated with respect to initial root system grade . Seven hundred twenty nursery-run bareroot northern red oak seedlings were graded according to numbers of large (> Imm) firstorder lateral roots and outplanted in spring 1987 on eight 90-tree plots distributed among three sites in central Iowa . Survival, height growth, and diameter growth were significantly greater for seedlings with 10 or more large first-order lateral roots than for seedlings with 4 or fewer . Seedling survival and growth were significantly and positively related to initial root grade .First-year height growth, however, was significantly and negatively correlated with initial height. Combined results for seedling survival and growth indicated that red oak seedlings with five or more large first-order lateral roots have a greater probability of success both in terms of survival and early growth than do those with four or fewer first-order lateral roots .

Bu çalışma, ülkemizdeki kurak ve yarı kurak bölgelerde yapılan ağaçlandırma çalışmalarında tercih edilen türler arasında yer alan saçlı meşede (Quercus cerris L.) tüp boyutu ve kökçük kırmanın fidan kalitesi üzerindeki etkisini araştırmak amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışmada dört farklı tüp boyutunda (11x22 cm, 12x25 cm, 14x35 cm ve 18x30 cm) kökçük kırma işlemleri (kontrol ve kökçük kırma) ile yetiştirilen 1+0 yaşlı fidanlarda bazı morfolojik (kök boğazı çapı, fidan boyu, gövde ve kök kuru ağırlığı, gövde:kök oranı, ana kök sayısı, yan kök sayısı, gürbüzlük indisi vb.) ve fizyolojik (gövde ve kök toplam karbonhidrat içeriği, kök gelişme potansiyeli) fidan özellikleri belirlenmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre, tüp boyutu ana kök sayısı ve gövde toplam karbonhidrat içeriği dışında ölçümü yapılan diğer fidan kalite özellikleri üzerinde etkili bulunmuştur. Kökçük kırma işlemi ise gövde:kök oranı, çapı 1 mm'den büyük yan kök sayısı, gürbüzlük indisi, gövde toplam karbonhidrat içeriği ve kök gelişme potansiyeli üzerinde etkisiz bulunmuştur. Kökçük kırma işlemi uygulanan fidanlarda tüp boyutu arttıkça kök boğazı çapı, fidan boyu, gövde kuru ağırlığı, ana, yan ve toplam kök kuru ağırlığı arttırmıştır. Kökçük kırma işlemi ana kök sayısını arttırmış, kök yüzdesi ve kök toplam karbonhidrat içeriğini düşürmüştür. En büyük tüp boyutunda daha kalın çaplı, boylu, daha ağır, yan dal sayısı ve yan kök sayısı daha yüksek fidanlar üretilmiştir. Zusammenfassung Auf drei Standorten, die sich hinsichtlich Klima-und Bodeneigenschaften unterscheiden, wurde für die Kulturen Carpinus betulus, Quercus robur, Euonymus europaeus am Ende des zweiten Standjahres untersucht, wie sich das Verschulen auf das Längen-und Dickenwachstum des Sprosses, auf die Sortierung und auf das Wurzelwachstum ausgewirkt hat. Das Pflanzenwachstum wurde zusätzlich durch das Spross-WurzelVerhältnis, das Verhältnis Trieblänge zu Wurzelhalsdurchmesser und Anteile an Grob-und Feinwurzeln charakterisiert. Die Bedeutung der Wachstumsparameter als Kriterium für den Anwachserfolg und die Überle-bensrate wird diskutiert. Das Verschulen hat das Sprosswachstum stärker als das Wurzelwachstum beeinflusst. Es bestehen große Wachstumsunterschiede zwischen den Standorten. Das Verschulen hat sich auf dem Standort mit den besten Bedingungen für die Wasser-und N-Versorgung der Kulturen am stärksten positiv auf das Sprosswachstum ausgewirkt. Auf dem Standort mit der schlechtesten Wasserversorgung blieb ein Effekt des Verschulens auf die Sortierung aus. Additionally, plant growth was characterized by the shoot-to-root ratio, height-to-root neck diameter, and proportions of coarse and fine roots. The significance of the growth parameters as criteria for survival is discussed. Transplanting influenced shoot growth more than root growth. The growth of the plants was highly site-dependent. Transplanting increased growth most on the site with the best conditions for water and N supply. Transplanting had no effect on grading for the site with the worst water supply.
