Influence of reactivity of sheath materials with Mg/B on superconducting properties of MgB2

Abstract: We investigated the influence of reactivity of commonly used sheath materials (Fe, SS, Cu, and Ni) with Mg/B, processed by in situ powder in sealed tube method on superconducting properties of MgB2. X-ray diffraction characterization of samples yields quantitative data of the volume fraction of MgB2 core, whereas magnetic measurements show the influence of added sheath materials on TC , JC(H), Hirr, and flux pinning behavior of MgB2. Our comparative study gives better phase purity, JC(H) characteristics, and f… Show more

“…Usually, boron-rich magnesium alloys have excellent material characteristics such as mechanical properties and stability 4 , 5 . Moreover, MgB 2 has been widely introduced into magnesium alloys for the reinforcement and grain refinement 6 , 7 , because of the chemical substitution and the crystal growth of substituted MgB 2 8 11 . Therefore, increasing attention has been paid to investigate the magnesium boride alloys in many academic fields.…”

“…For large scale electric power applications, superconducting MgB 2 tapes or wires are required to be produced in long lengths to replace conventional superconductors [1]. The fabrication of sheath-typed tapes by the powder-in-tube (PIT) method with a high critical current density (J c ) under high magnetic field has been actively studied [2][3][4][5][6][7]. The film growth of MgB 2 superconductors has been achieved using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) [8][9][10], pulsed laser deposition 6 Author to whom any correspondence should be addressed.…”
