Influence of Pyelocaliceal Anatomy on the Success of Flexible Ureteroscopic Approach

Abstract: Pyelocaliceal anatomy influences the performances of flexible ureteroscopy. This parameter, lesion location (stone or tumor) and the influence of accessory instruments on flexible ureteroscope's deflection should be evaluated before recommending flexible ureteroscopic approach.

“…FUR success rates for renal stones smaller than 20 mm are higher than in SWL and have similar complication rates [5,10,14]. Geavlete [7] showed that LIP \30°and straight infundibulum are the major limiting factors for FUR success in inferior renal pole stones. Jessen [12] performed 111 FUR procedures in patients with inferior renal pole stones and noticed that the only parameter that altered stone-free rates after FUR was infundibular length.…”

“…The spatial anatomy of the lower pole group of calices influences the success rate of FUR [7,12]. Patients with unfavorable parameters show lower stone-free rates when FUR was the method of choice [7,12].…”

“…When the included angle between the pelvis ureter and funnel of the lower calyx was less than 30°, the lithotripsy success rate was extremely low. [8][9][10] The success rate of flexible ureteroscopy has been reported as 83% to 86.3% for lower calyceal calculi of 1 to 2 cm. 11,12 In our analysis, the success rate was 91.4%.…”
