Influence of Pollution Level on Heavy Metals Mobility in Soil From Nw Romania

Abstract: To assess the influence of pollution degree on the heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Zn, Pb) mobility in soil, total metals content obtained by extraction in aqua regia and extractable contents in a buffered diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) solution were measured using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Soil samples were collected from two areas from NW Romania with different pollution levels: a mining area (Baia Mare) and … Show more

“…[17,18] Non-ferrous metals (Pb, Cu, Au, Ag, Zn) were extracted and processed in Baia Mare region, Northwestern Romania since ancient times, leading to a historical pollution with Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd and As. [19] The smelting of non-ferrous metals is known as a source of Hg emission, due to the presence of Hg both in minerals and in the coal used in the smelting processes. [20] However, no data was found in the literature regarding Hg levels in the Baia Mare area, probably due to the special methodology required for its determination from solid samples.…”

“…The soil quality guidelines are usually based on total metal content, although it is generally accepted that total metal content include both bioavailable and non-bioavailable fractions [4]. The estimation of bioavailable metal fractions is, generally, based on single or sequential extraction procedures [5,6], but these provide only a classification of metal fractions in the soil compartments. Additionally, in the pretreatment stage of these procedures, the physical–chemical equilibrium in soil may be affected [7].…”
