There is an increasing concern over simultaneous wear and corrosion (tribocorrosion) issues that cause the material failure of stainless steel in marine environments. The main objective of this study is to understand the effect of tribocorrosion conditions on pitting susceptibility and synergistic material loss for AISI 304 stainless steel. For this purpose, tribocorrosion tests were conducted in a natural seawater-filled corrosion cell integrated with a tribometer. An alumina ball of 6 mm radius slid against AISI 304 stainless steel plates under 5 N and 7.5 N loads in natural seawater. The cyclic polarization scans were carried out under corrosion and tribocorrosion conditions in the natural seawater by applying different loads. Also, tribocorrosion tests were conducted under anodic (0.3 V), cathodic (−0.5 V) and Open Circuit Potential (OCP) to determine the effect of electrochemical potential on pitting susceptibility and material loss rate. The study revealed that electrochemical potential significantly affects pitting corrosion and material loss, and the material losses increased significantly from the cathodic potential to the anodic potential. Furthermore, the material loss of AISI 304 alloy during tribocorrosion in natural seawater due to corrosion was significantly lower than wear. The wear-corrosion synergism played an essential role in total material loss, confirming that wear and corrosion affect accelerated material loss positively. The material loss of AISI 304 is mainly due to pure mechanical wear and corrosion-induced wear.

Offshore mooring systems are susceptible to wear, corrosion, and fatigue damage, making improving their tribocorrosion resistance essential. This study aims to evaluate the effects of boron-aluminizing treatment on the corrosion and tribocorrosion resistance of R4 steel in a marine environment. The boron-aluminide coating was characterized by SEM, EDS, and XRD, revealing the presence of FeAl as the dominant phase with minor amounts of FeB, Fe2B, and Fe2Al5 phases. Results showed that the boron-aluminide coating improved the corrosion resistance of R4 steel, acting as a barrier between the coating and the steel substrate and maintaining its corrosion resistance even under wear conditions. The findings suggest that the boron-aluminide coating can potentially improve the corrosion and tribocorrosion resistance of R4 steel in marine environments, making it a cost-effective alternative to passive materials for the thermochemical coating of low-alloy steels.

In this study, heat-treated and multisurface engineered DIN 1.2367 tool steel was subjected to room and elevated temperature wear tests, and the effect of nitriding on its tribological behavior was investigated. CrN, AlTiN, and CrN/AlTiN coatings with a total thickness of 2 µm were obtained by arc cathodic physical vapor deposition on conventional heat-treated and gas-nitrided steels. The white layer formed during nitriding was removed, and a diffusion layer (100 µm) was achieved in the cross section of the steel having a tempered martensitic matrix. The highest surface hardness was attained with an integral coating (CrN/AlTiN), and surface hardness increased even more after nitriding due to the formation of a multicomponent ceramic layer on top of the diffusion layer. The room temperature wear tests performed against an alumina counterpart revealed that (i) CrN/AlTiN-coated steel had the highest friction coefficient of 0.26, which further increased to 0.33 by nitriding due to the increase in shear strength, and that (ii) with increasing surface hardness, the specific wear rates (W) of the heat-treated and coated steels could be ranked as follows: WCrN/AlTiN < WAlTiN < WCrN. The wear rates decreased when nitriding was carried out prior to coating. In order to simulate the aluminum extrusion conditions, hot wear behavior of the surfaces against AA6080 alloy at 450 °C was investigated. The hot wear tests revealed that (i) high friction coefficients were reached due to the adhesive characteristic of aluminum to the surfaces, (ii) the nitrided and CrN/AlTiN-coated sample exhibited the lowest wear rate among all studied surfaces, and (iii) the film damage on the worn surfaces mostly occurred in the form of droplet delamination.
