Influence of Physical and Chemical Parameters on the Treatment of Heavy Metals in Polluted Stormwater Using Zeolite—A Review

Abstract: Zeolite-based technology can provide a cost effective solution for stormwater treatment for the removal of toxic heavy metals under increasing demand of safe water from alternative sources. This paper reviews the currently available knowledge relating to the effect of properties of zeolites such as pore size, surface area and Si:Al ratio and the physico-chemical conditions of the system such as pH, temperature, initial metal concentration and zeolite concentration on heavy metal removal performance. The primar… Show more

“…ions, and the increase of the selectivity with the decrease in the concentration of the external solution. This behavior supports the electroselectivity effect due to the Donnan potential which acts with a greater force on an ion with higher charge and which increases with the dilution of the external solution (Ziyath et al 2011). It can be observed that for concentrations of the external solution higher than 0.5 eq/L, the Na ?…”

“…Zeolite has a SiO 4 or AlO 4 tetrahedral structure with cages and cavities as secondary structures due to different arrangement of tetrahedral structures [18], but charcoal has amorphous structure. Filter will have higher strength if it has structure rather than amorphous form so reducing charcoal content will reduce amorphous form.…”

“…Zeolite with low Si/Al ratio, will have high sorption capacities because they have more binding site. Acid activation using strong acid will break Al bonding so zeolite will have low Si/Al ratio [18]. This research used HF for zeolite activation so we will have zeolite with low Si/Al ratio and only adsorb low amount of Sr atom.…”

“…Zeolite-based technology can provide a cost effective solution for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment for the removal of toxic heavy metals under increasing demand of safe water from alternative sources [21][22][23]. Numerous previous studies have investigated the removal efficiency of zeolite tuff when placed in fixed bed columns confirmed their excellent performance on the removal of metal cations from wastewaters [24][25][26].…”
