Influence of physical activity on periodontal health in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. A blinded, randomized, controlled trial

Abstract: Objectives The aim was to investigate the effect of physical activity on periodontal health and HbA1c levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) over a period of 6 months. Materials and methods Thirty-seven patients with non-insulin-dependent T2DM were included in the study. The intervention group (n=20) performed physical activity over a period of 6 months. “…9 In one randomized controlled trial, a significant improvement in periodontal health was found after 6 months of exercise intervention in patients with type 2 diabetes. 26 Moreover, our study results are similar to those of previous studies. 27,28 Shimazaki et al 27 demonstrated that having high aerobic power estimated by maximal oxygen uptake values and low BMI was associated with a low prevalence of periodontitis indicated by the CPI among Japanese adults.…”

“…Various scientific investigations show that inflammatory factors play an important role in creating and increasing IR [ 5 ]. Increased CRP concentrations have been reported in people with prediabetes [ 31 ]. In a case-control study conducted by Mahat, Roshan Kumar et al, on 400 individuals, the data showed that CRP levels in the prediabetes group were significantly higher than in the control group [ 32 ].…”

“…Persistent hyperglycemia causes continuous nonenzymatic condensation of plasma glucose with haemoglobin, contributes to rise of HbA1 C in diabetics. 5 HbA 1C is considered as a diagnostic tool along with the follow up parameter by recent American Diabetic Association (ADA) guidelines. The ADA suggests that the glycaemic goal is to achieve HbA1 C value as close to normal as possible without significant hypoglycaemia.…”
