Influence of peritoneal dialysis solution on measurements of fluid status by bioimpedance spectroscopy

Abstract: The presence of peritoneal fluid in PD patients has a negligible influence on measurements of FO by BIS. The BIS measurements can be therefore conveniently and reliably done without emptying the peritoneal cavity; this may facilitate the use of BIS in this particular group of patients.

“…Previous studies have indicated that the presence of intraperitoneal fluid is insignificant when assessing volume status by whole body bioimpedance (8), in agreement with our findings. Nevertheless, some differences have been noted when performing segmental evaluation, in which the trunk and limbs can be assessed separately.…”

“…Nevertheless, the degree of discrepancy may vary between the type of analyzer and the absolute magnitude of difference may be small [20]. Conflicting results were obtained when bioimpedance spectroscopy (in the present study) and multi-frequency bioimpedance analysis were applied respectively [22]. More importantly, we have shown that change in body composition parameters (ovehydration and lean tissue mass) were significantly correlated with the degree of frailty as measured by the Frailty Score (Table 2).…”

“…In the present investigation, we have not only measured peritoneal glucose absorption, but also assessed body composition by bioimpedance method. This may suffer from methodologic errors, but is validated as a clinical tool to evaluate body composition in ESRD patients (19,20,42,43).…”
