Influence of pattern of drinking on cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular risk factors‐a review

Abstract: There is an established inverse relationship between the regular light consumption of alcohol (5-10 g/day) and the incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD). This association has several biologically plausible mechanisms with dose-dependent effects of alcohol to increase HDL cholesterol, lower plasma fibrinogen and inhibit platelet aggregation. However, such a protective effect against atheroma cannot be considered in isolation from known adverse effects on blood pressure and triglycerides or possible detrime… Show more

“…RyR-mediated Ca 2ϩ mobilization generates Ca 2ϩ sparks and can contribute to propagating Ca 2ϩ waves, the latter Ca 2ϩ modality also being activated by inositol (1,4,5) trisphosphate (IP3)-mediated Ca 2ϩ mobilization (26,37). We show that EtOH does not alter Ca 2ϩ waves (supporting information) but inhibits Ca 2ϩ sparks.…”

“…Moderate-heavy drinking is associated, independently of any other factor, with an increased risk for stroke and deaths from ischemic stroke (3,4). Binge drinkers are significantly predisposed to brain hemorrhage, cerebrovascular spasm, and stroke (3,5).…”

“…Average volume of alcohol consumption and patterns of drinking are associated with the risk of ischemic heart disease (Puddey, Rakic, Dimmitt, y Beilin 1999;Rehm, Sempos, y Trevisan 2003). To model the risk of ischemic heart disease, we used an RR based on average volume of consumption ((Roerecke y Rehm 2012); see also (Corrao, Rubbiati, Bagnardi, Zambon, y Poikolainen 2000), or (Ronksley, Brien, Turner, Mukamal, y Ghali 2011) for similar results) for all individuals who did not engage in heavy drinking (see Table 3 above).…”
