“…Sample ML has been obtained from a well in the postmature part of the Marcellus shale in the northeast of Pennsylvania . The Longmaxi shale samples (LG3, LG4, and LG5) were retrieved from sections WX-1, WX-5 (in the same well), and WX-7 (in another well) in the Jiaoshiba area (Fuling gas field) and Dingshan area (west of Fuling), respectively . The mineralogy of all samples is reported in Table S1, and details on the associated experimental procedures can be found in the publications listed above.…”

“…The samples are composed of a variety of clay minerals, and they differ in both their organic content and degree of thermal maturity. The Marcellus and Bowland shales have a maximum vitrinite reflectance of approximately 4.0% and 1.1%, respectively, and the Longmaxi shales have an equivalent vitrinite reflectance (as they are vitrinite-free) of approximately 3.3–4.6% . This is also reflected in their visual appearance: the B samples are light gray, while ML and LG samples are much darker and almost black.…”
