Influence of , or additions on the microstructure and the critical current density of melt processed YBCO samples

Abstract: The present work is devoted to investigating the effect of CeO 2 , PtO 2 and BaCeO 3 additives on the Y 2 BaCuO 5 morphology and the melt processing of YBCO. The samples were synthesized by the melt texture growth (MTG) process in order to observe the Y 2 BaCuO 5 morphology in the liquid phase at high temperature, in the YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7−x matrix resulting from the peritectic reaction, and the resulting microstructure of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7−x . It is concluded that these investigated dopants exhibit similar effects c… Show more

“…undoped): homogeneously dispersed Y211 particles are embedded in the Y123 matrix. The Y211 particles are micron size due to the action of CeO 2 as a refiner of this phase in melt-grown samples [18][19][20]. The microstructures exhibited in these micrographs are very similar to the one presented in figure 2 for a fluorine-free sample.…”

“…The non-superconducting 211 particles are widely thought to act as flux pinning sites, [35][36][37] where the defects and dislocations associated with the 211 particles in the 123 matrix are primarily responsible for the increased flux pinning. [38][39][40] It has been widely accepted that these dopants modify the liquid-phase characteristics at the properitectic stage and alter the growth behavior of the 211 particles in the liquid. 5 The size of the 211 particles in general is altered by adding few percent of dopants as e.g., PtO 2 , CeO 2 , etc., to the 123 material.…”
