Influence of oil aging on the space charge dynamics of oil‐immersed paper insulation under a DC electric field

Abstract: The formation of space charge in oil/paper insulation system can lead to material degradation in the region of high electric field. Therefore, it is important to understand the factors that affect space charge formation in oil/paper insulation system. In this paper, the effect of oil aging on space charge dynamics in oil/paper insulation system is investigated using the pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) technique under a DC electric field at room temperature. The ultraviolet/visible (UV/vis) spectrum of the oil shi… Show more

“…In Southampton, Gemini X mineral oil was thermally aged at 130˝C for up to 22 days, and then, preprocessed unaged paper samples were impregnated with oil of different ageing status to form a series of oil-paper insulation samples. After that, the space charge dynamics of these oil-paper samples were investigated using the PEA technique under DC 6 kV (three layers, 210 µm in thickness, 30 kV/mm) [20].…”

“…To distinguish between two types of interactions that affect ionic mobility, namely the interaction between the ion and polymer structures and its interaction with external electric fields, the lifetime correlation function L (t) was introduced in this study [44], described as below in Equation (7).…”

“…Numerous experimental studies have been conducted to investigate the charge trapping and transport phenomenon in oil‐paper insulation. The accumulation of charge at the oil‐paper interface is a common phenomenon that can be observed in various space charge experiments, including those involving different electric fields [5], ageing conditions [6–9], and impregnation patterns on the oil‐paper insulation [10]. This charge distribution and accumulation near the oil‐paper interface were explained by the formation of an electric double layer (EDL) [11] or surface potential barrier [12] across the interface.…”

“…Many previous researches have been carried out to explore the ageing characteristics of oil/papers insulation [10–13 ]. Hao et al [14 ] adopted the pulsed electro‐acoustic technique to investigate the space charge dynamic characteristics for the ageing oil, and the breakdown performances of the cellulose pressboards for the different electrical ageing levels in the composite electrical field were thereafter explored [15 ]. However, few researchers investigate the effects of the nanoparticle mass fractions on the electrical ageing characteristics of the cellulose pressboards.…”
