Influence of obstructive sleep apnoea in coronary artery disease: A 10-year follow-up

Abstract: In patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is found to be about 14-65%. In this study, the influence of OSA in 50 patients with CAD was prospectively compared during a follow-up period of 10 years. In the follow-up period 4 of 25 patients with OSA and 5 of the 25 without OSA died by cardiovascular complications. The proportion survival curve showed no significant difference for patients with CAD and with versus without OSA. The results of this rather small 1… Show more

“…SDB was independently and significantly associated with a composite end-point of death, cardiovascular events and myocardial infarction. HAGENAH et al [24], however, failed to confirm these observations. They conducted a 10-yr follow-up on 50 patients with cardiovascular disease, all .70 yrs of age, of whom half had an AHI .10 events?h -1 .…”

“…Peker and colleagues 12 reported an increase in mortality rates among 62 patients with coronary artery disease during 5 years of follow-up. On the other hand, Hagenah and colleagues 14 reported no increase in death rates related to sleep apnea among 50 patients with coronary artery disease. We have previously reported an increased risk of the combined end point of death, myocardial infarction, stroke, and transient ischemic attack at an oxygen desaturation index of 5 or more.…”

“…Moreover, the frequency of nocturnal desaturations correlated with the extent of coronary lesions and explained 13.4% of their variance, suggesting a pathogenetic role of OSAS in coronary atherosclerosis [120]. Some studies, however, did not confirm that OSAS worsened the prognosis of patients with CAD, as 10-yr survival did not differ between apnoeic and nonapnoeic subjects in a small series of 50 coronary patients [121].…”
