Influence of Mydriatic Eye Drops on Wavefront Sensing With the Zywave Aberrometer

Abstract: The cycloplegic effect of mydriatic eye drops should be taken into account when interpreting aberration measurements and planning a wavefront-guided ablation. Ideally, the use of mydriatic eye drops should be avoided to minimize refractive surprises.

“…The conclusion of this paper is compatible with previous studies and theories [10]. It has to be mentioned that there are also very few cases with a small amount (-0.25 D) of adverse deviation, which may be due to: (1) Signi cant changes in high-order aberrations of eyes after pupil dilation will affect the measurement of diopter to vary degrees [11,12]. (2)Adolescents have extremely strong accommodation function, so the optometry results under the tiny pupil may not be reliable.…”

“…This study has several limitations. First, concerning measurement of wavefront and HOAs, the constants of Zernike polynomials vary with the size of the pupils, making pupil size an important factor [ 22 , 23 ]. However, in the present study, the subjects were children aged between 9 and 15 years, with relatively small-sized pupils.…”

“…Taneri et al 43 investigated the influence of mydriatic eye drops on aberrometry measurements taken with the Zywave™ aberrometer in terms of the predicted phoropter refraction (PPR) and HOAs. A mydriatic dilated group of eyes were compared with a group of non-dilated eyes.…”
