Influence of mineral water constituents, organic matter and water matrices on the performance of the H2O2/IO4-advanced oxidation process

Abstract: We have recently reported that the reaction of H2O2/IO4− could be a new advanced oxidation process for water treatment [N. E. Chadi, S. Merouani, O. Hamdaoui, M. Bouhelassa and M. Ashokkumar, Environ. Sci.: Water Res. Technol., 2019, 5, 1113–1123].

“…In addition, the EPR 1 O 2 signal in the PI/H 2 O 2 solution was little different from that in the PI alone solution (Figure e), which does not support the mechanism of eq . The difference between Figure e and the report of Chadi et al , may be ascribed to high [H 2 O 2 ] 0 of 50 mM used in their study whereas the in situ generated H 2 O 2 in the PI/HA system, if any, should be very low. Therefore, we rule out eq as a source of 1 O 2 in the PI/HA system.…”

“…15 In addition, Chadi et al recently reported the activation of PI with H 2 O 2 to achieve the rapid removal of an organic dye, proposing that ROS such as • OH and 1 O 2 were major reactive species whereas • IO 3 contributed less to dye removal (eqs 13−16). 16,17 Therefore, the reactive species involved in the PI-based AOPs seems complex. The mechanisms are still ambiguous, and the roles of other oxidants like ROS need to be further investigated.…”

“…Chloride is usually known as a hydroxyl radical scavenger, where this reaction can yield less reactive oxidants (Clc and Cl 2 c À ) according to reactions ( 21)- (23). 57 The complexation of Fe(II)/Fe(III) with Cl À through reactions ( 24)-( 27) is another pathway that may cause a decline in oxidation efficiency via consumption of free iron. 19 Cl À + cOH / ClOHc À , k 21 ¼ 4.3 Â 10 9 M À1 s À1 (21)…”

“… 56 f is the transfer function; x j is the neuron’s inputs; and w ij is the link between IL and HL (weights) and the HL’s threshold of j neuron. 50 , 53 Constructing and training neuronal networks has as its primary goal the minimization of the objective function (or fitness function), which in turn leads to better predictions for new input. 52 , 57 The latter compares the output and experimental data sets to determine how well the network operates.…”
