Influence of microstructure and internal stress on the mechanical behavior of electroplated gold freestanding thin films

Abstract: Abstract. Mechanical properties of freestanding electroplated gold thin films were studied in relationship to their geometrical and microstructural properties. Three different techniques of characterization were used: nanoindentation, bulge tests and microtensile tests. Results were compared to literature and also discussed according to physical phenomena related to the elaboration process of the specimens like seed layer exodiffusion or internal stress state. The observed plasticity and failure mechanisms wer… Show more

“…In a previous study, a Young's modulus value of (68.2 ± 2.2) GPa was found by nanoindentation on similar samples with a 111 texture. 35 This result did not consider the indetermination of Poisson's ratio. It was estimated that a 5% uncertainty in Poisson's ratio corresponded to a minimum variation of 13% in the Young's modulus value.…”
