Influence of Microsilica Content on the Slag Resistance of Castables Containing Porous Corundum–Spinel Aggregates

Abstract: Corrosion of five corundum-spinel castables containing the same porous aggregates and different matrices by converter slag (C/S 5 3) was conducted using the static crucible test through the counting pixels method, XRD, SEM, EDAX, and so on. It was found that the corrosion and penetration resistance depend on the microsilica content. Microsilica content strongly affects liquid phase formation in the matrix, changes the porosity, pore size distribution of matrix, and viscosity of slag penetrated, and thus affect… Show more

“…MgO-Al 2 O 3 refractories are widely used as working linings of high temperature vessels, e.g., periclase-spinel refractories for cement rotary kilns and corundum-spinel refractories for steel ladles [1][2][3][4][5][6]. However, the shell temperature at the external surface of the vessels could exceed 300-400 1C in service leading to severe heat loss because these MgO-Al 2 O 3 refractories are manufactured by using dense aggregates as main raw materials.…”
