Influence of mariculture on the distribution of dissolved inorganic selenium in Sanggou Bay, northern China

Abstract: Selenium is known as a 'double-edged sword' element on account of its dual beneficial and toxic effects on organisms, depending on its concentration and chemical form. Dissolved inorganic selenium (DISe) concentration in the water column and selenium content in biological species were investigated in a typical aquacultural area in Sanggou Bay, China. In addition to sampling within Sanggou Bay, the main sources of DISe into Sanggou Bay were sampled to estimate selenium transport from different sources. Results … Show more

“…The information provided by sensory parameters has been standardized for use in the B investigation by assigning scores (0, 1, 2 or 4) to the sensory variables. The mean score is calculated by sum scores multiplied by the correction parameter 0.22 (Yang, 2018). Mean score of 0 indicates no effect, whereas a score of 4 indicates a strong affected.…”

“…While the MOM system was developed for fish mariculture, it is based on a general concept of environmental management that can be adapted to other species by adjusting the appropriate parameters and techniques. The MOM-B system has undergone continual improvements since its initial development and has been widely applied in environmental assessments of fish, shellfish, algae and other aquaculture activities (Hansen et al, 2001;Oh et al, 2015;Yang, 2018;Zhang et al, 2009Zhang et al, , 2020.…”

“…These substances originate from husbandry activities, or in low-quality feed, and can contaminate products and lead to negative socioeconomic consequences. Examples of these substances include selenium, organochlorine pesticides such as hexachlorocyclohexanes, DDTs, and other PHCs (Yu et al 2011a;Yu et al 2011b;Wang et al 2014a;Chang et al 2016). To gain consumer support for suspended mariculture over the long term, it will be important to mitigate these issues through proper monitoring, regulation, and certification.…”
