Influence of Lactobacillus pentosus S-PT84 Ingestion on the Mucosal Immunity of Healthy and Salmonella Typhimurium-Infected Mice

Abstract: Lactobacillus pentosus (L. pentosus) strain S-PT84, isolated from Kyoto pickles, enhances splenic natural killer (NK) cell activity, and has high T-helper1 (Th1) cytokine and type 1-IFN (IFN-α) inducing activity. In the present study, we investigated the influence of S-PT84 ingestion on the mucosal immunity of healthy and Salmonella Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium)-infected mice. In the S. Typhimurium infection model, numbers of S. Typhimurium in feces and the spleen were significantly decreased, and body weight l… Show more

“…[21][22][23] Heat-killed S-PT84 has also been shown to enhance immune function as well as preventing virus or pathogenic microorganism infection in mice. [18][19][20] In this study, we compared the immunomodulatory effects between live and heat-killed S-PT84. The results of the present study showed that heat-killed S-PT84 was more effective in inducing IL-12 or IFN-γ production than live S-PT84 in vitro.…”

“…Heat-killed S-PT84 can stimulate IL-12 and IFN-γ production C 2011 The Pharmaceutical Society of Japan through interactions between dendritic cells and natural killer (NK) cells, 16) and can induce several beneficial immunomodulatory effects including the inhibition of allergic reaction and the prevention of virus or pathogenic microorganism infection in mice. [17][18][19][20] However, it was not known whether live S-PT84 exhibits additive effects compared to heat-killed S-PT84. Therefore, we compared the immunomodulatory effects between live and heatkilled S-PT84 in BALB/c mice.…”

“…Izumo et al (28,29) and Hayama et al (30) reported that the Lactobacillus (L.) pentosus strain S-PT84, isolated from Kyoto pickles, has inhibitory activity against influenza virus, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Candida albicans infection in mice, and S-PT84 enhances IFN-α production from plasmacytoid dendritic cells by virus stimulation (31).…”

“…Lactobacillus pentosus is a lactic acid bacterium commonly used as starter culture for the fermentation process (Ruiz-Barba et al 1994). Certain strains of L. pentosus exert probiotic properties, improve mucosal immunity and create resistance towards bacterial infections (Kotani et al 2010; Izumo et al 2011). …”
