Influence of localized microstructure evolution on second harmonic generation of guided waves

Abstract: The following work is intended to utilize the potential of nonlinear guided waves to characterize incipient fatigue damage. Since fatigue crack initiation often occurs in regions where there is localized microscale damage, this difficult-toanalyze condition is investigated in simplistic terms. The third order elastic constants are taken to be a function of position in accordance with the plastic strain distribution accrued during a quasistatic tension test. Two specimen geometries are considered along with mul… Show more

“…Using the meta-screen, a 20 mm × 20 mm local incipient damage is introduced to the plate as illustrated in figure 3(b), which is simulated by tripling the Landau constants ( Ā, B, and C) of the material in the local area [40,42]. It is worth noting that the stiffened plate has weak nonlinear elastic properties and the damage is simulated by amplifying the nonlinear elastic constants in local zones.…”

“…Specifically, Set-I represents pure linear aluminum and Set-II the intact aluminum with weak nonlinearity. As the higher order elastic constants are closely related to the material microstructures, the last two sets in the table are used for two aluminum materials containing incipient damage of increasing levels, from Set-Ⅲ to Set-IV, which are taken from literature [34]. In addition, the plate is divided into four zones (A-D) where the material properties are selected from the four sets of material data in different simulations.…”

“…As the normal strain of the host structure is a known variable, the differential equation with respect to the normal strain of the sensor can be obtained by substituting the geometric and constitutive equations of the bonding layer into equation (35) as…”

“…where g L bs can be obtained by combining equation (35) and the constitutive equation of the bonding layer. As the SAN shares the same mechanism with AAN, the governing equations for the nonlinear wave sensing problem are identical to those in the nonlinear wave actuating process, with different subscripts used for the corresponding elements.…”
