Objective: Obesity is a contributing factor to various non-communicable diseases. This study is aimed at determining the prevalence and predictors of overweight and obesity among secondary school adolescents in Kuwait, a problem that has not been studied in the past few years. Methods: This investigation, which adopted a cross-sectional design, was conducted at public secondary schools in all the six Kuwaiti governorates, via. Al-Ahmadi, Jahra, Hawalli, Al Asimah, Al-Farwaniyah and Mubarak Al-Kabeer. Secondary school students aged 15 to 18 years old were recruited using cluster sampling. Data were collected from 4,958 eligible participants and analyzed using Chi-square test for association relation, and multiple logistic regression to determine significant predictors of obesity. Result: Our findings reported a prevalence of 13.7% of overweight and 2.3% of obesity, they also showed that adolescent males and adolescents in some school districts had a higher tendency to be obese. Also, our findings indicated that only a minority of the adolescents were obese (n=115; 2.3%). A multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the respondents' obesity was significantly associated with gender and school district. Girls were more likely to be non-obese (AOR=1.702, 95%CI: 1.160-2.498, P=0.007). Students from the school district of Al-Ahmadi were less likely to be obese compared to students from Mubarak Al-Kabeer (AOR=2.497, 95%CI: 1.002-6.219, P=0.049). Conclusion: Gender and school district were significantly associated with obesity.

The nutrients and anti-nutrients of freshly harvested Arachis hypogaea aluminium phosphide preserved (APP) non-aluminium phosphide preserved (NAPP) were investigated. The study aimed at determining the effect of aluminium phosphide on nutrients and anti-nutrients levels of legumes using A. hypogaea as a case study. The proximate composition, minerals profile and anti-nutrients were estimated using standard analytical methods. The proximate compositions showed that NAPP is significantly (p<0.05) higher than APP except the fiber (03.01±0.06 mg/100 g; 03.80±0.06 mg/100 g) and ash (01.00±0.06 mg/100 g; 02.23±0.06 mg/100 g) carbohydrate (07.40±0.06 mg/100 g; 03.48±0.06 mg/100 g), protein (19.93±0.06 mg/100 g; 14.94±0.06 mg/100), fat (74.60±0.06 mg/100 g; 68.08±2.75 mg/100 g), and moisture content (06.40±0.06 mg/100 g; 3.00±0.06 mg/100 g). Exception of phosphorus (65.00±0.06 mg/100 g; 63.00±0.06 mg/100 g), the minerals concentration was significantly (p<0.05) higher in NAPP compared to APP. Iron (76.20±0.06 mg/100 g; 62.00±0.06 mg/100 g), potassium (38.01±0.06 mg/100 g; 26.20±0.06 mg/100 g), manganese (26.02±0.06 mg/100 g; 15.10±0.06 mg/100 g), magnesium (11.00±0.06 mg/100 g; 06.00±0.06 mg/100 g), calcium (82.10±0.06 mg/100 g; 72.00±0.06 mg/100 g) and zinc (25.01±0.06 mg/100 g; 14.01±0.06 mg/100 g).The anti-nutritional factors showed significant difference (p<0.05) higher in tannin (9.33±0.69 mg/100 g; 1.90±0.02 mg/100 g), oxalate (32.50±0.60 mg/100 g; 42.50±0.60 mg/100 g), phytate (16.72±0.60 mg/100 g; 5.48±0.60 mg/100 g), alkaloid (16.72±0.6 mg/100 g; 5.48±0.60 mg/100 g) and saponins (40.74±0.60 mg/100 g; 38.20±0.60 mg/100 g) except cyanide (0.02±0.00 mg/100 g; 0.02±0.00 mg/100 g). The study showed that aluminium phosphide negatively affected the nutritional profile of A. hypogaea. Thus, the effect of aluminium phosphide should be further investigated in vivo.

Resumo Objetivou-se verificar a associação da simultaneidade de comportamentos de risco com a obesidade em adultos (18 a 59 anos) das capitais do Brasil. Trata-se de um estudo transversal de base populacional, realizado por entrevista telefônica. As variáveis autorrelatadas foram a obesidade, definida pelo peso e altura (IMC ≥ 30 kg/m²) e os comportamentos de risco: inatividade física (≤ 149 min/sem), tempo sentado em excesso (≥ 4h/dia), consumo frequente de doces (≥ 5 dias/sem) e de carnes vermelhas com gordura e/ou frango com pele (≥ 1 dia/sem). A simultaneidade dos comportamentos de risco foi analisada por razões das prevalências observadas e esperadas. Foram utilizadas as regressões de Poisson e logística multinomial, em análises por sexo, brutas e ajustadas por fatores sociodemográficos. Dentre os 35.448 adultos, nos homens, a simultaneidade do consumo de carnes com gordura, tempo sentado em excesso e inatividade física (RP: 1,94; IC95%: 1,45; 2,60), assim como a presença dos quatro comportamentos de risco (RP: 1,72; IC95%: 1,16; 2,53), associaram-se à obesidade. Em mulheres, o consumo simultâneo de doces e de carnes com gordura (RP: 1,77; IC95%: 1,19; 2,66) também se associou ao desfecho. Em ambos os sexos, observou-se aumento da tendência de obesidade conforme o somatório de comportamentos de risco.
