Influence of Levodopa on Serum Levels of Anterior Pituitary Hormones in Man

Abstract: Serum cortisol, growth hormone (GH), and luteinizing hormone (LH) were measured in 6 controls and in 9 normal subjects following oral administration of 500 mg of Levodopa (L-Dopa). Serum cortisol levels decreased similarly in both the treated and the control group over a 3 h teste period. Serum GH levels increased dramatically, whereas LH levels showed a small but significant decrease in 7 of 9 subjects. These alterations occurred during the first 2 h following L-Dopa administration. GH and LH levels did not c… Show more

“…One study showed that oral administration of levodopa significantly decreased circulating LH concentrations in normal men (48). However, in a subsequent report, infusions of L-dopa or serotonin in normal men did not suppress serum LH concentrations (49).…”

“…Studies in man have yielded conflicting results, the majority of studies being performed with only one adrenergic drug and the conclusions some¬ times differing significantly (Boden et al 1972;Polansky et al 1976;Leblanc et al 1976;Lachelin et al 1977). Our study, employing many DA-ergic agents, indicates that whatever the DA-ergic agent employed, DA-ergic drugs as a group inhibit LH release, and makes possible some interpretation on the mode of action of DA and DA-ergic drugs in lowering LH levels.…”

“…In human beings 1-dopa, the biological precursor of DA, has been shown by some authors (Boden et al 1972;Leblanc et al 1976;Lachelin et al 1977) to inhibit LFI release or to be without effect (Polanskietal. 1976).…”
