The retained austenitefraction in the surface remelted layer ofthe steels and cast irons after heating by the surface heat source is determined by the degree of the carbide phase dissolution at the end of the heating stage. The amount of the retained austenite correlates with the highest temperature at the end ofthe heating stage. There is an optimum value of the retained austenite fraction in the surface remelted layer, the said optimum value corresponds to the highest values of the resistance to the wear, contactfatigue and anodic dissolution ofthe steels and cast irons.

After melting the thin surface layer of steels arul pig irons with a localized heat source, the amount of residual austenite in this layer is determined by the degree of dissolution of the carbide phase alul correlated with the max#turin temperature attained at the end of the heating stage. In this work, we have investigated the effect of the amount of residual attstenite in the melted layer on the wear resistance, the contact fatigue, alut the anodic dissolution from some steels and pig irons.
