Influence of ion chamber response on in‐air profile measurements in megavoltage photon beams

Abstract: This article presents an investigation of the influence of the ion chamber response, including buildup caps, on the measurement of in-air off-axis ratio (OAR) profiles in megavoltage photon beams using Monte Carlo simulations with the EGSnrc system. Two new techniques for the calculation of OAR profiles are presented. Results of the Monte Carlo simulations are compared to measurements performed in 6, 10 and 25 MV photon beams produced by an Elekta Precise linac and shown to agree within the experimental and si… Show more

“…The ionization chamber simulations used the egs_chamber user code, a egspp C++ module specifically designed for accurate IC simulations. Full MC IC modeling has been successful in characterizing a wide variety of chamber response characteristics . The Exradin A18 cylindrical IC serves as the reference for the parameter variations.…”

“…In addition, in-air profiles measured with ionization chambers using a low atomic number buildup cap as well as beam profiles measured at shallow depths in water were found to be sensitive indicators of the linac focal spot size and shape. 3,4 In Monte Carlo simulations of PDD distributions and beam profiles, a FWHM of 1 -1.5 mm is often used as an initial focal spot size estimate and subsequently modified to match the calculated beam profiles with measured ones. 5,6 Thus, the measured beam profiles can serve as practical means for determination of the effective focal spot diameter for use in Monte Carlo simulations, provided that the beam profile data are measured accurately.…”
