Influence of Intracavity Power on Frequency Characteristics of Iodine-Stabilized He-Ne Laser

Abstract: Following a shift in the industry to solid-state lasers during the past decade, resonator tubes which can be used in iodine-stabilized helium-neon (He-Ne) lasers are being discontinued by most manufacturers. After installing a replacement tube, it was discovered that its intracavity power was not equal to that of the original tube. The influence of this change on the uncertainty of frequency was determined over the course of several months. Mirrors in the optical cavity were adjusted for optimal intracavity po… Show more

“…The laser interferometer frequency is calibrated in the lab by using a primary length standard [29], [30], while the air sensor is calibrated in the national laboratories for temperature and pressure. The total standard uncertainty of the laser interferometer is = √(10 nm) 2 + (0.2 • 10 −6 • ) 2 .…”

“…However, proper measurement and its evaluation as well as a reliable uncertainty analysis of the results of calibration of screw thread gauges are difficult and complicated tasks. [1] Results of thread gauge calibration must be traceable to the SI metre definition [2]. Conventional methods and procedures for pitch diameter calibration have been well known since the 19th century; these methods involve the use of universal length measuring machines [3].…”

“…In order to be able to reach expected measurement accuracy, laser interferometers and corresponding air sensors shall be calibrated periodically [4]. The laser frequency is calibrated by comparison with primary standard laser [5][6][7], while whole instrumental system can be checked by means of comparison measurement with a reference laser interferometer, presented in this article.…”
