INTRODUÇÃOO feijão-caupi tem grande importância nutricional, social, econômica e estratégica, com boas perspectivas no agronegócio brasileiro. Além disso, essa leguminosa tem a capacidade de interagir com bactérias fixadoras de N 2 , o que pode contribuir para aumentar a produtividade e diminuir os custos de produção (Soares, 2006), alem de proporcionar uma agricultura mais sustentável (Moreira & Siqueira, 2006;Rodríguez et al., 2006). Além dos rizóbios, outras bactérias em habitats naturais colonizam o interior e exterior de órgãos de plantas e podem ser benéficas, neutras ou prejudiciais ao seu crescimento (Mariano et al., 2004). A utilização desses microrganismos, denominados de BPCPs (bactérias promotoras de crescimento de plantas), visando à melhoria da produção agrícola será provavelmente uma das ferramentas mais importantes na atualidade. Diante do exposto, pesquisas vêm sendo desenvolvidas no intuito de se conhecer cada vez mais as potencialidades das BPCPs. (Han et al., 2005); assim, a coinoculação de rizóbio com outras bactérias promotoras de crescimento vegetal tem mostrado potencial para aumentar o crescimento vegetal, a nodulação e a fixação de N 2 em várias leguminosas. A dupla inoculação com Azotobacter spp., Azospirillum spp. ou Paenibacillus e estirpes de rizóbio apresentou efeito sinérgico na nodulação, crescimento das plantas, rendimento e captação ou fixação de N 2 nas culturas da soja, trevo, amendoim e feijão (Burns et al., 1981;Raverker & Konde, 1988;Burdman et al., 1997;Figueiredo et al., 2008a). Da mesma forma, a coinoculação de Pseudomonas spp. e Rhizobium spp. melhorou a nodulação e fixação de N 2 , biomassa vegetal e produção de grãos em várias espécies de leguminosas, como alfafa (Bolton et al., 1990), soja (Dashti et al., 1998), feijão-mungo-verde (Sindhu et al., 1999) e grão-de-bico (Goel et al., 2002 Bradyrhizobium spp. pode melhorar a nodulação e crescimento de plantas de feijão e soja, respectivamente (Srinivasan et al., 1997;Camacho et al., 2001;Bai et al., 2003). Os mecanismos utilizados pelas rizobactérias para promover nodulação e fixação de N 2 são, na sua maioria, desconhecidos ou permanecem ambíguos. Maior desenvolvimento radicular e absorção induzida de nutrientes pela BPCP e seus metabólitos (Lugtenberg et al., 2002; PerselloCartieaux et al., 2003, Lacava et al., 2008, podem contribuir indiretamente para a nodulação e a fixação de N 2 (Vessey & Buss, 2002 (Rodriguez & Fraga, 1999) como o P, que é de extrema importância para as plantas e que, apesar de ser abundante nos solos na forma orgânica e inorgânica, é o nutriente mais limitante do crescimento vegetal em solos tropicais, devido à sua fixação no solo. Algumas BPCPs podem produzir hormônios de crescimento pela presença de 1-aminociclopropano-1-carboxilato (ACC) deaminase (Correa et al., 2004) e ácido indol acético (AIA) (Cattelan, 1999).
