Influence of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 infection on the natural course of chronic parenterally acquired Hepatitis C

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible role of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in the natural course of chronic hepatitis C. Seventy-six adult patients with chronic parenterally acquired hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection examined from 1989 to 1993 were enrolled; of these 32 (42.1%) were HIV positive and 44 (57.9%) were HIV negative. Serum HCV RNA quantitation was carried out by polymerase chain reaction in a well-characterized group (n = 20; 11 HIV positive and 9 HIV negative… Show more

“…Some studies have associated HCV coinfection with a faster HIV progression, although this conection is controversial 5,18,[21][22][23]30 . HCV infection also increases the toxicity to antiretroviral medications 9,18,26,27,32 .…”

“…[7][8][9] Several factors such as alcohol abuse, coinfection with HBV or HIV, gender or age at infection determine the highly variable course of liver disease in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. 5,[10][11][12] Besides, the hepatocellular injury in patients with CHC results from the host's immunemediated responses to viral infection. In this respect, the host's immunogenetic make-up plays an important role in determining the natural history of CHC.…”

“…The livers of coinfected patients have more fibrosis and more severe necroinflammatory changes (1,3,5,14,27). The frequencies of cirrhosis (5,27,32,35) and hepatic decompensation (12,22,29,37) are increased among coinfected patients compared to those among patients infected only with HCV.…”

“…The course of chronic HCV infection is accelerated in patients coinfected with HIV (12,13,30,32,35,37,41). The livers of coinfected patients have more fibrosis and more severe necroinflammatory changes (1,3,5,14,27).…”
