Fritillaria unibracteata is an endangered medicinal material species endemic to the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, and belongs to the national Class III endangered plant. In addition to expelling wind and removing damne, it also warms menstruation and relieves pain in clinic use of tranditional Chinese medicine. In recent years, affected by the destruction of shrubs and climate change, the habitat of F. unibracteata wild resources has been seriously damaged, indicating of great significance to predict its potential suitable habitat using MaxEnt model. The AUC values without human activities were 0.983 ± 0.013–0.988 ± 0.001, while it is 0.982 ± 0.015–0.989 ± 0.000 with human activities, justifying their applications for predicting the potential areas of F. unibracteata. Without human activities, there were 8.47 × 104 km2 of highly suitable habitats in northern Sichuan, southern Gansu and southeastern Qinghai. But the poorly, moderately and highly suitable areas of F. unibracteata have decreased to 33.8 × 104 km2, 9.66 × 104 km2 and 6.64 × 104 km2 due to human activities. Environmental variables affecting F. unibracteata distribution included the minimum temperature in the coldest month (−16.89–−4.96 °C), annual precipitation (416.64–866.96 mm), temperature annual range (24.83–31.97 °C), elevation (2879.69–3981.82 m), human footprint (2.58–23.66) and mean UV-B of highest month (7381.92–8574.27 kJ/m2). In the 2050s and 2090s, human activities would significantly reduce the highly suitable habitats of F. unibracteata. Under SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios, the centroid would move to the low latitude area from the current position first, and then to a high latitude area. Wild resources of F. unibracteata in China can be effectively conserved based on our results.

Context Wetlands persistently diminish due to their own vulnerability, along with the combined impact of changes in the ecological surroundings and interference from anthropogenic interventions. Comprehending the driving mechanisms of wetland changes is crucial for wetland conservation. Objectives This research seeks to analyze the dynamic change characteristics of wetlands in Hefei. The objective is to establish a framework for urban-rural gradient analysis, exploring the impact of ecological surroundings and anthropogenic interventions factors, as well as their interactions, on wetland dynamics across different urban-rural gradient regions. Methods In this research, an urban-rural gradient was defined utilizing a clustering indicator derived from the composition and configuration of land use. The optimal parameters-based geographical detector (OPGD) performed a quantitative statistical analysis of the driving forces behind wetland changes under different urban–rural gradients. Results The results indicate that: (1) From 1990 to 2020, wetland area exhibited an ongoing diminishing tendency. (2) The urban–rural gradient can be classified into four categories: urban, agricultural village, semi-ecological village, and ecological village. (3) The driving factors of wetland changes vary across different types of urban–rural gradient regions. The most significant factors influencing wetland changes in each type of gradient region during different periods are the cropland proportion, impervious surface, OC, silt, and GDP. (4) Interactions among driving factors generally exhibit stronger explanatory power. Conclusions The research results reveal the driving mechanisms that underlie wetland dynamics in different urban–rural gradient regions. This information supports the development of more targeted wetland restoration and protection plans, contributing to improved synergy between urban and rural development and ecological conservation efforts.

Accurately estimating shrub biomass in arid and semi-arid regions is critical for understanding ecosystem productivity and carbon stocks at both local and global scales. However, capturing the shrub biomass accurately by satellite observations is challenging due to the short and sparse features of shrubs. In this study, we presented a framework to estimate shrub biomass at a 10m spatial resolution by integrating ground in-situ data, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), Sentinel-2, and Sentinel-1 observations. The pilot study was conducted in the Helan mountains of Ningxia province, China. First, the spatial distribution map of shrubland and other land cover types was generated in 2023. Then, a prediction model of shrub biomass was developed in a Random Forest Regression (RFR) approach driven by different predicted variable datasets based on in-situ measurements, UAV, and satellite images. Finally, the developed model was used to produce the biomass map of shrubland in 2023. The uncertainty was characterized by creating a standard deviation (SD) map using the Leave-One-Out Cross-Validation (LOOCV) method in the shrub biomass estimates. The resultant shrubland distribution map in 2023 has an F1 score of 0.92. The shrub biomass model driven by spectral bands and vegetation indices (R2= 0.62) demonstrated superior performance than that only driven by spectral bands (R2=0.33) or vegetation indices (R2=0.55). The uncertainty of the estimated biomass was lower than 4%, with the lowest values (<2%) happening in the high shrub coverage (>30%) and biomass production (>30kg/m2) regions. Furthermore, the findings show that the magnitude of shrub biomass was affected by the aridity and precipitation significantly in the study region. This study provides a workflow to accurately monitor the biomass of shrublands in a complicated environment based on remote sensing images from multi-platform observations.
