Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) has been utilized for decades to obtain the pore size, pore volume and pore structure of variable porous media including inorganic rocks and organic rock (e.g., shales and coals). Diffusivity and permeability are the two crucial parameters that control gas transport in coals. The main purpose of this work is to derive the CH 4 effective gas diffusivity and permeability in different rank coals with vitrinite reflectance of 0.46-2.79% R o,m by MIP. Furthermore, regular CH 4 diffusivity and permeability measurements are conducted to compare with the results of the derived CH 4 diffusivity and permeability with MIP data. In this work, CH 4 diffusivity and permeability of different rank coals are acquired with established equations, which are basically in accordance with the experimental values. However, the coal rank (maximum vitrinitere flectance, R o,m) exhibits no significant relation to the effective diffusion coefficient (De) and gas diffusivity (D). The cementation factor (m values) varies from 2.03 to 2.46, which tends to exhibit a semi-consolidated structure for coals compared with other rocks (e.g., dolomite, limestone, sandstone and red brick). The results show that the cementation factor could be an important factor for gas flow in coals. The correlation of CH 4 diffusivity to porosity and permeability of 12 coal samples were explored, and it appears that CH 4 diffusivity exhibits an increasing trend with an increase of permeability, and two different exponential relationships respectively exist in diffusivity versus porosity and permeability versus porosity. Therefore, this study could be conducive to gas sequestration or gas production during enhanced coalbed methane (CBM) recovery.

As one of the main consumables of interior decoration and furniture, decorative paper can be seen everywhere in the indoor space. However, because of its high content of formaldehyde, it has a certain threat to people’s health. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and study new formaldehyde-free decorative paper to meet the market demand. In this work, we have obtained formaldehyde-free decorative paper with high CO2 adsorption capacity. Here, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were prepared by hydrolyzing microcrystalline cellulose with sulfuric acid. The N-(2-aminoethyl) (3-amino-propyl) methyldimethoxysilane (AEAPMDS) was grafted onto the CNCs by liquid phase hydrothermal treatment, and the aqueous solution was substituted by tert-butanol to obtain aminated CNCs (AEAPMDS-CNCs). The as-prepared AEAPMDS-CNCs were applied to formaldehyde-free decorative paper by the spin-coating method. The effects of various parameters on the properties of synthetic materials were systematically studied, and the optimum reaction conditions were revealed. Moreover, the surface bond strength and abrasion resistance of modified formaldehyde-free decorative paper were investigated. The experimental results showed that AEAPMDS grafted successfully without destroying the basic morphology of the CNCs. The formaldehyde-free decorative paper coated with AEAPMDS-CNCs had high CO2 adsorption capacity and exhibited excellent performance of veneer to plywood. Therefore, laminating the prepared formaldehyde-free decorative paper onto indoor furniture can achieve the purpose of capturing indoor CO2 and have a highly potential use for the indoor decoration.

CO 2 capture using hydroxide-based adsorbents is studied experimentally for two adsorbents of Mg(OH) 2 and Ca(OH) 2. The adsorbents are characterized before and after the adsorption process by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses. The experiments were carried out in the ranges of 25-65°C, 2-10 bar, and 0.5-2.5 g for temperature, initial pressure, and weight of adsorbent, respectively. Based on the response surface methodology with a central composite design approach, predicted CO 2 adsorption capacities are fitted well with R 2 values of 0.981 and 0.929 for Mg(OH) 2 and Ca(OH) 2 , respectively. The Freundlich isotherm model with R 2 values of 0.985 and 0.994 is the best model for adsorption capacity prediction of Mg(OH) 2 and Ca(OH) 2 , respectively. Also, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model with R 2 values more than 0.98 is selected as the best model for both adsorbents. From the thermodynamic parameters, the reactive adsorption process is found to be exothermic and spontaneous. Due to higher adsorption percentage and capacity at the same conditions, Ca(OH) 2 is more efficient than Mg(OH) 2 for CO 2 capture at studied ranges.
