Influence of Hemodynamic Factors on Rupture of Intracranial Aneurysms: Patient-Specific 3D Mirror Aneurysms Model Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation

Abstract: BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:Hemodynamics factors play an important role in the rupture of cerebral aneurysms. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of hemodynamic factors on the rupture of the MANs with 3D reconstruction model CFD simulation.

“…Following Marquering et al (2011) and Liu and Ribeiro (2010), local partial orthogonal decomposition was used for 2D flow pattern recognition. After definingŵ ¼ x þ iy andv ¼ v x þ iv y on complex plane, velocity was decomposed on an orthogonal basis around the positionŵ 0 and at time t, aŝ vðŵ 0 þ Dŵ; tÞ % X k k ðŵ 0 ; tÞ/ k ðDŵÞ ð6Þ…”

“…Since hemodynamics may have large impact on both the IAs rupture (Lu et al 2011;Cebral et al 2011;Pereira et al 2014) and treatment efficacy (Pereira et al 2013) (e.g. flow diverter stents), precise experimental investigations of flow related to clinical outcomes are therefore strongly required.…”

“…Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been used to clarify the mechanisms of aneurysmal initiation, growth, and rupture and to predict these by processing various hemodynamic parameters such as wall shear stress (WSS) [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10], which is the tangential frictional stress of blood flowing along the vascular wall and is widely considered to be associated with rupture. Both high [3][4][5] and low [6,8,10] WSS have been correlated with aneurysmal growth and rupture.…”

“…Both high [3][4][5] and low [6,8,10] WSS have been correlated with aneurysmal growth and rupture. On the basis of these inconsistent reports, Meng et al proposed a unified hypothesis stating that both high and low WSS play an important role in the rupture of intracranial aneurysms (IAs) [11].…”
