Influence of guide wire removal on tip location in peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs): a retrospective cross-sectional study

Abstract: ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) malposition and the influence of guide wire removal on tip location in PICCs and determine whether related factors, including age, sex, side of insertion and brand of catheter, influence the PICC tip location.SettingSingle-centre research institute in China recruiting patients from the hospital.ParticipantsA total of 837 adult patients with inserted PICCs were recruited from October 2016 to May 2017.… Show more

“…The discrepancy between studies is likely due to differences in the methodologies applied and application and TA B L E 5 Distribution of the laboratory profile of patients at the time of PICC removal after the first pass (n = 359). interpretation of the guidelines for the passage and maintenance of catheters, type of cancer studied, socioeconomic factors of the countries where the studies were carried out, and even the weather (Ornowska et al, 2022;Vashi et al, 2017;Wang et al, 2019;Yun & Yang, 2021).…”

“…The anxiety levels before and after PICC. The state trait anxiety inventory (STAI) scale [11] was used to evaluate the anxiety levels of the patients 24 h before and after the catheterization. Each item has 4 levels (1 for no anxiety, 2 for little anxious, 3 for moderate anxiety, 4 for obvious anxiety), and a total score of 20 to 80 can be used to quantify the unpleasant short-term emotional experiences [12] .…”

“…[2] Retrospective studies of hospitalized patients have demonstrated that PICC tip malposition is common, with rates ranging from 2.3% to 76%. [5] Improved venipuncture accuracy has resulted in increased procedural success, mainly owing to the expanded availability of portable ultrasonography. [2,6] In vitro measurement is the most widely used method in clinical practice and is an approach that is recommended by the Infusion Nurses Society.…”
